When are hotel prices at their highest?
When the rooms fill up. Across the EU, July and August together take about a third of the whole year's nights, and that is when rates peak. The steeper a country's summer spike, the wider the gap between its high and low season prices.
Does this tool show prices or demand?
Demand. It charts how many nights were actually spent in each month, from official statistics. Free, reliable price data by month and country does not exist publicly — but occupancy is what hotels price against, so the shape of the curve is the shape of the prices.
What is shoulder season?
The months either side of the peak. Demand has dropped well below the summer crush but the destination is still fully open. It is usually where the best value sits: lower rates, shorter queues, and most things still running.
Which European countries are the most seasonal?
Croatia and Greece, by a wide margin. Croatia packs 55% of its entire year into July and August; Greece 42%. At the other end, Malta, Germany and Finland spread the year out, with only 22–24% falling in those two months.
Why do some countries peak in winter?
Snow. Austria and Switzerland show two peaks a year — one in summer and one in February — because the ski season is a full second high season. In those countries the cheap months are spring and late autumn, not winter.
When is the quietest time to visit Greece?
January and February. August records roughly twenty times the nights of January. Islands largely shut down over winter, so the realistic value months are May and October, when demand is under half the summer level but almost everything is still open.
Does low season mean everything is closed?
It depends on the destination. Cities run all year. Island and beach resorts often close ferries, hotels and restaurants outside the season, so the cheapest month can also be the one with the least to do. Shoulder months avoid that trade-off.
How much can shifting my dates actually save?
Moving a week or two matters more than haggling. In the most seasonal countries the difference between peak and shoulder demand is several times over, and hotel pricing tracks it closely. The same room in the same hotel is a different product in August and in October.
